Short film on Sofia's early years launched
As Sofia heads into construction the project has used this milestone as an opportune time to produce a video looking back over the past 12 years, since the award of the seabed rights by The Crown Estate.
Sofia has launched a 7-minute film explaining how the project - one of the world's largest offshore wind farms - went from a mere concept in 2010 to achieving the go ahead for its construction in 2021.
The development of a wind farm takes many years and requires thousands of experts as it requires a diverse range of surveys, in-depth research, innovative engineering & design, thorough consultation and careful planning as it is matured to the stage where contracts with Tier 1 suppliers can be signed and construction can begin.
The film celebrates the efforts of everyone involved in the project, achieving its development consent and other milestones such as winning a Contract for Difference, at the lowest ever strike price. It also introduces the main component suppliers who will be responsible for the next highly exciting phase of the wind farm's lifecycle - its construction.
The short video presentation will be used in supplier forums, at industry events and with students of varying ages to show the amount of effort and expertise required to bring a wind farm to its maturity. It is hoped it may inspire some of the next generation to choose a career path in offshore wind by showing the huge range of skills and jobs required to develop a wind farm, and highlighting opportunities in the growing sector.
