Severfield Nuclear and Infrastructure

Severfield Nuclear and Infrastructure is part of Severfield, the largest structural steel fabricator in the UK. Severfield provides a total steelwork building solution from design and engineering, through fabrication, surface treatment and site installation. The company has six fabrication facilities in the UK and works across all major sectors including commercial, stadia, transport, nuclear, defence and renewables.

Scope of work: For Sofia, Severfield N&I undertook the connection design, fabrication, treatment, and assembly of the onshore converter station steel frames. The company also supplied the cladding support system; metal deck and site paint touch up for the buildings.

Economic and employment: As well as being based locally, on this contract Severfield N&I used a Darlington-based installation contractor, Braddan Structures, to install the steelwork, employing its labour workforce from the nearby area.

Training and development: For all the company's site, factory and construction-based roles - including on the work carried out for Sofia - there are set mandatory training requirements for all roles from site manager to apprentice. For roles which are not site or production based, such as design, QA and commercial roles, the standards required are set by the senior person within the department and where required include professional qualifications.

All new recruits who will be site based or carry out construction roles, are assessed at interview stage against the required competencies for the role, where the competencies do not meet the required minimum standard, these are addressed immediately following recruitment and prior to being deployed onto site. For non-site-based staff, competence is assessed and recorded at the point of recruitment by reviewing and checking the relevant qualifications of the recruit and verifying membership of professional bodies.

All employees are given access to web-based information management system called workspace, where there is a training area for each person within the business allowing them to input qualifications held and training received, along with the attainment and expiry dates.

"Sofia was an important project for us in terms of our desire to work in the renewables sector. This is a sector we wish to forge a strong reputation in and this project gave us the platform to do that. Sofia gave us the opportunity to work alongside Kier, GE, and RWE to deliver a key infrastructure project to the highest safety and quality standards."
