Sir William Turner Hospital Residential Association

Sofia's fund will be used to buy equipment that will help make the communal garden more accessible for residents and visitors.

Improving the wellbeing of residents

The organisation: Sir William Turner Hospital Residential Association works to support the retired residents of the 25 individual flats (former almshouses) in the Grade I historic building in Kirkleatham, Redcar. Built in 1676 and refurbished in 2002, the building provides accommodation for local people, many elderly and living on their own.

The initiative: The grounds include a communal garden which is the ideal spot for the residents to socialise and take light exercise or joint activities. However it was lacking in equipment that would facilitate these activities. The grant awarded by the Sofia Fund will provide garden furniture, and croquet and boules sets, to encourage residents and their visitors to utilise the outdoor area, improving their mental and physical health and general wellbeing.
