Kirkleatham Hall School Friends

Outdoor sensory garden created for special needs students at Kirkleatham Hall Special School to opportunity to stimulate the senses like small and touch in a controlled way.

The organisation: Kirkleatham Hall School (KHS) Friends is a small group of parents, staff and friends who have joined together to support the children of Kirkleatham Hall Special School. A team of Trustees comprises parents of children who attend the school - a special school based in the village of Kirkleatham, Redcar.

The initiative: A bespoke outdoor mobile sensory garden will be provided for pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties, and visual and hearing impairments. As they use their other senses to explore the world around them, the sensory garden will provide a safe and natural environment for the young people to enjoy supervised, assisted outdoor sensory exploration using smell, touch, sight and sound. It will feature a range of fragranced, coloured and textured plants and flowers of different heights for accessibility for wheelchair users. A bird bath, garden art and flowers that attract insects such as butterflies, will all add to the sensory experience.
